Wood Stove Regulatory Relief Act Introduced in Congress

ARLINGTON, VA - Since the publication of the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) New Source Performance Standards (NSPS) for Residential Wood Heaters, the Hearth, Patio, and Barbecue Association HPBA, Arlington, Va, has been contacted by numerous Capitol Hill offices about the possibility of legislation to protect the industry.

HPBA officials reported that the first NSPS Regulatory Relief Act (officially titled the Wood Stove Regulatory Relief Act of 2014) was introduced today by Rep Blaine Luetkemeyer (R-MO) [pictured] and Gregg Harper (R-MS).

HPBA’s early understanding is that the bill will seek to prevent EPA from imposing “Phase 2” regulatory requirements on the product categories affected by NSPS. There are also provisions that would ease the transition time burdens on hydronic heaters and warm air furnaces.

Provisions that allow for product sell-through within an extended time period are also included for retailers. Upon introduction, HPBA will provide members with a more complete analysis of the legislation. Those who would like to know more about the legislation are encouraged to contact John Crouch at crouch@hpba.org.
