GREENVILLE, NC - July 4th has come and gone, but there is another Independence Day coming. July 22nd is National Hammock Day – yes, it’s a real holiday. It’s the perfect observance to declare your independence from s-t-r-e-s-s.

“Simply march out into your backyard, settle into your hammock and relax. While many holidays seem especially designed to actually heighten stress – last minute Christmas shopping at the local mall, anyone? National Hammock Day exists purely to celebrate ridding ourselves of worries and anxiety that have a proven adverse impact on health.

That’s the hammock’s function now, sure. But that was hardly the part this amazing lawn accessory played in in the past. Far from the ready symbol of relaxation it has long since become, the hammock started out as something functional, not fun.

Originally “discovered” by Christopher Columbus in the America’s, the hammock has evolved over the years. Originally a cocooning design, a S.C. riverboat captain introduced the spreader bars which offered a relaxed, open reclining experience. In addition, his design was a latticed woven one, fashioned from cotton which allowed greater airflow around the body.
