Gloster Touts Sustainable Luxury

Leading the way in ethically grown and harvested teak furniture, Gloster’s pedigree spans over 50 years and across three continents. Based in Europe with worldwide offices and manufacturing in Indonesia, Gloster is one of the world’s largest international producers of responsibly produced outdoor teak furniture.

Trace Gloster’s roots back to West Africa in 1960 and you will find a dedicated, passionate group of entrepreneurs and furniture craftsmen that began the long, exciting journey of creating an entirely sustainable, innovative, luxury brand of outdoor furniture. In the early 1970’s, increased demand and access to sustainable, plantation-grown teak led Gloster to move workshops to Indonesia.
Teak was initially introduced to the islands by Buddhist monks about 700 years ago. When the Dutch colonized Indonesia in the 19th century, they soon realized the opportunity to establish large plantations and introduced the sustainable plantation management systems that are still in use today. An insightful move for the times.

Understanding teak resources and respecting the sustainable plantation culture, Gloster only harvest what they plant themselves. Every tree that is felled was placed in the soil by third to fourth generation teak graders. A Gloster teak tree (Tectona Grandis) has a lifecycle of at least 50 years, and wood can always be traced back to its origin. Today, that same drive, conviction, and pride that launched the Gloster brand continues to fuel the business. The philosophy is simple; design the most well-crafted, innovative product while honoring our teak roots, from seed to seat.
