Elmira Stove Works Celebrates Five Decades

Elmira Stove Works is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2025. In 1975, Tom Hendrick bought the tooling and brand name for an iconic woodburning cookstove - the beloved Findlay Oval - from the Findlay Foundry in Carleton Place, Ontario, and began building the Oval in nothing more than a chicken barn outside of Elmira. Fifty years later Elmira Stove Works is selling woodburning cookstoves, 1890’s-inspired appliances, and midcentury modern-inspired appliances through hundreds of retailers across all of North America

Sourcing its components in Canada and the US, the company takes pride in its North American roots and commitment to excellence, producing appliances that are not only functional but also add a touch of nostalgia and charm to homes. Throughout its history, Elmira Stove Works has maintained a strong reputation for creating long-lasting, reliable appliances while supporting local manufacturing and contributing to our economy.

“When we started, our goal was to create appliances that evoke nostalgia while meeting the needs of modern kitchens,” said Tony Dowling, vice president of Sales and Marketing at Elmira Stove Works. “Now, as we celebrate 50 years, we see a new generation embracing the very same vintage styles that inspired our brand in the first place. It’s an exciting full-circle moment.”

In addition to a newly redesigned website, Elmira’s 50th anniversary celebration will also include a series of events like appearances at the Cottage Life shows in Ottawa and Toronto with anniversary themed displays, social media throwbacks, and photos from consumers as well as vintage and lifestyle influencers to showcase how the brand has stood the test of time.

“Fashion, cars, and home design have always reflected the cultural spirit of their times,” added David Watson, CEO of Plaintree Systems, the parent company of Elmira Stove Works. “Just as the VW bus and bell bottoms have re-emerged as fashion statements, our appliances continue to prove that good design never goes out of style.”
