Silver State Inc. is proud to celebrate their 60th anniversary as a decorative fabric supplier to interior designer, residential, contract and hospitality markets.

A second generation, family-owned and operated business, Silver State has evolved from a small upholstery supplier to a prominent, decorative wholesale fabric supplier to date. Silver State Suppliers was purchased on February 1, 1952 by two brothers, John and Steve Sargetakis. It originated in Nevada (from its namesake), but they bought it after the company moved to Utah. They sold mostly upholstery supplies and Velon, the precursor to vinyl. The previous owners looked to sell the business because new vinyls were threatening their Velon sales. They knew that the inventory was obsolete.

A third brother, Mike moved back to Salt Lake City from San Francisco to join the company in May 1952. “They had their share of early complications with the business.
Velon was obsolete, vinyls were a better option, the original owner was shorting customers and they soon discovered the bookkeeper was stealing from the company.”
Manolì Sargetakìs explains.

Kaliope the current President started working for the company in 1956 as Kaliope Katsanevas. Later, she married the youngest brother, Steve Sargetakis. In 1957 the fourth brother Ted joined the company. They moved the business to 240 East 6“ South, where they would set up shop for the next 39 years. They sold upholstery
supplies such as thread and glue, vinyl and then entered the world of decorative fabrics.

Today, the three sons of Steve (the youngest brother from the first generation) are the Principals of Silver State. Manoli, John and Ted Sargetakis, each have memorable accounts of growing up in the business, working odd jobs and being promoted from cleaning the restrooms to updating samples and cards. In 1995, they
moved to the current location at 1010 West 2610 South. They continue to make critical business decisions like exiting the supply business, focusing on performance fabrics for residential and hospitality, and exiting automotive and marine fabrics. To date, Silver State Inc. is the largest and best decorative distributor of SUNBRELLA® outdoor upholstery fabrics in the United States.
