Fire Magic Icon Bob Keck Posthumously Honored by the American Society of Gas Engineers

LAS VEGAS - The American Society of Gas Engineers bestowed Fire Magic’s Bob Keck with their Honorary Award for his devotion and outstanding contributions to the Gas Appliance Industry. Son David Keck, R.H. Peterson Co. Vice President, accepted the posthumous award for his father from Bill Salem, President of the ASGE on Tuesday, June 4th at Southpoint Resort in Las Vegas.

Born in the greater City of Angels area, Bob discovered his love of outdoor living very early in life. An avid runner, hiker/backpacker and fishing enthusiast, Bob enjoyed outdoor living to the fullest, all his life.

While attending high school, Bob worked in various jobs at Whittier Steel and Mfg., a company his father Harold founded in 1937. Bob learned very quickly under his father’s guidance to build fireplaces and barbecue components under the trade name Fire Magic. After graduating from college, Bob worked full time for his father.

In the early 1970’s, Bob and his brother Gerald designed the first A.G.A. certified indoor slide-in grill for use with natural gas. They branded the grill Fire Magic.

In 1982, R.H. Peterson Co. acquired Fire Magic Barbecues from Whittier Steel and Mfg. and Bob joined RHP as the General Manager of the Fire Magic Division. During his 19 years of tenure, Bob was personally involved in the design and development, purchasing, sales and marketing for the Fire Magic product line. Bob retired as Vice President after serving 48 years in the outdoor grill industry.

People described Bob as a kind, considerate and caring man who was always ready with a helping hand and readily shared his knowledge with colleagues.
